Ashok Chavan set to become Maharashtra CM

New Delhi: Ashok Chavan is likely to be the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

Chavan, a member of the Legislative Assembly from Nanded and the state Industries Minister, has the backing of a majority of Maharashtra Congress legislatures.

Maharashtra Congress Legislature party has also endorsed Chavan's name. He will fill in the vacancy created by the exit of Vilasrao Deshmukh.

However, a formal announcement will be made on late Thursday night or probably even Friday, given that the Congress party is deliberating over the move.

Deshmukh was forced to resign as the chief minister of Maharashtra late on on Wednesday night following last week’s Mumbai terror attacks that claimed the lives of at least 217 people and left over 300 others injured.
