Bhubaneshwar: Among the 17 states and Union Territores that will vote in the first phase of the General Elections 2009, is Orissa.
The BJP faces a litmus test here after the anti-Christian violence that rocked the state eight months ago in Kandhamal.
A BJP candidate Ashok Sahu too faces a litmus test as he has been sent to jail.
The BJP's Kandhamal candidate Ashok Sahu who is a former IPS officer, was finally arrested for his hate speech against Christian missionaries during his campaign.
Sahu had taunted Christians with this speech and taunted the police too, daring them to arrest him after the EC ordered an FIR against him.
It’s another embarrassment for L K Advani in Delhi.
But in communally sensitive Kandhamal, the timing for Sahu could turn out to be perfect. Tuesday was the last day of campaigning as Kandhamal goes to the polls on the April 16.
It took the police two days to catch up with him, after he went underground for two days.
He was produced in court and will be in judicial custody like fellow BJP candidate from Pilibhit, Varun Gandhi.
The two will fight elections from behind bars.
But Ashok Sahu is not the only person to be fighting behind bars.
Prime accused Manoj Pradhan is also contesting elections behind bars.
With the split between the BJP and BJD, BJP candidates from Kandhamal seem to have only one card to play, which is the Hinduvta card.
