New Delhi: The Supreme Court has refused to direct a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe against spiritual leader Asaram Bapu. This pertains to the death case of two boys, Dipesh and Abhishek Vaghela, who were found dead in his Sabarmati ashram in the year 2008.
The Gujarat CID had filed a chargesheet of culpable homicide against seven sadhaks of Asaram Bapu. But that had been struck down by the Gujarat High Court.
Cousins Dipesh and Abhishek Vaghela, both residents of Asaram's Motera Ashram, were found dead on the bed of Sabarmati river in July 2008. The state government had constituted a judicial commission after a huge public outcry over the deaths.
The commission had in October 2012 rejected the spiritual leader's plea for recording his statement at his Ashram. The commission had also made it clear that Asaram will be called for his deposition after his son Narayan Sai appeared before it on November 8. The panel also rejected the plea of the father-son duo seeking a stay on the order so that they can challenge it in the high court.
