New Delhi: The tsunami-hit areas of Asia on Friday remembered the victims of December 26, 2004 natural disaster that wrecked havoc killing over 1.2 lakh people in 12 countries.

A special prayer meeting is to be held at the Tsunami Memorial in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on the fourth anniversary of the tsunami in memory of those who lost their lives that that fateful day.

About 10,805 lives were lost in India and over 5,640 people have been missing ever since.

The tsunami affected fishing villages in South East Asia and the subcontinent.

Many tourists on Christmas vacations were also its victims.

In Tamil Nadu silent processions, special prayers and worship to 'Mother Sea' marked the fourth anniversary of tsunami devastation.

In the coastal districts of the state people took out tearful processions and visited the 'samadhis' of those who perished in the devastating tragedy,

to pay their homage.

Nagapattinam district bore the brunt of the tsunami and more than 6,000 people perished in the coastal district alone.

In a number of fishing hamlets, the anniversary was observed as 'Black Day'.

Fishermen, who stayed away from fishing, wore black badges and hoisted black flags on top of their houses to recall the horrifying scenes and shed tears for those killed.

Silent and candle light processions were also taken out in the coastal districts of Kanniyakumari, Tuticorin, Cuddalore and Chennai in memory of those who perished in the devastation.

Prayers were also held in the other tsunami-affected countries.
