New Delhi: On international women's day, a global survey highlights that men continue to dominate the boardroom. But Asian women are be doing better.
Indra Nooyi is the new poster girl for women who have broken the glass ceiling.
She also makes up an interesting statistic – only 22 per cent of senior management positions globally are occupied by women.
In fact, the latest findings from a Grant Thornton global survey reveal that 40 per cent of businesses worldwide have no women in top management roles and this figure has remained unchanged since 2004!
Philippines is the only country where women have parity to men in senior management roles.
India, the land of feminine Shakti, sees only 14 per cent of senior positions being occupied by women. However, the good news is that there is a marginal hike in this number.
“Today I think the Corporate India is very-very accepting of women. It really shows that women are capable of really taking on this kind of highly demanding responsibilities,” Biocon Founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw.
In the EU, proportion of women in senior management has remained constant over two years at 17 per cent.
Countries like the US, Canada and Australia have seen a marginal increase.
But Asian countries like Philippines, Hong Kong and Thailand have seen a 3 per cent rise in the number of women in top corporate positions Media, entertainment and IT, are some sectors where women are becoming increasingly visible.
In fact, one-third of employees at Indian software companies today are women. However, most of them give up their lucrative careers for motherhood.
While India is well below the global average of 22 per cent, there seems to be hope and optimism about the road ahead.
But the harsh reality, which can’t be ignored that 65 per cent of married women in India are victims of domestic violence.
So Indian women will need to battle mindsets and socio economic disadvantages before they make it to the boardroom.
