Siliguri (West Bengal): A gold bearer Asian champion in powerlifting from Siliguri city in India's West Bengal state is lacking money to move to Pune city for the forthcoming Commonwealth powerlifting championship. He thus wants to sell his medal to participate in the event.

Power lifting is one of the toughest competitions in the sports arena. It is divided in three parts - the Squat, the bench press and the dead lift.

In comparison to other sports like cricket; powerlifting is not encouraged to that extent in India.

With no help from the Sports Association of India, Asian Champion in Benchpress, PowerLifting, Ashok Chakraborty is being forced to sell off his medals.

"To enter into forthcoming championship (Commonwealth) a lot of money is required. I won't be able to arrange such huge amount. This time also like earlier Championships State or central government is not taking any initiative to provide us anything. Hence, I have decided that I will keep both gold medals for auction," said Ashok.

He has won several accolades and laurels. He has broken all records in the lightweight category of the powerlifting championship.

He is also an Asian record holder and a Gold medallist in 2006 Asian powerlifting championship held at Manila, Philippines.

He was a champion in the year 2009 as well when he won a gold medal, breaking all records, in the lightweight category in Chandigarh. He lifted 122.5 kilograms in the bench-press category and created a record.
