Sibsagar: A major disaster was averted when a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was recovered from a school playground in Sibsagar district of Assam just before the flag hoisting on Thursday.
Official sources said a plastic packet containing the IED was detected near the podium prior to the flag hoisting at the Dighalipukhuri High School at Sonari.
The bomb defusal squad of the police and the army respectively visited the spot and subsequently defused the bomb.
Although no insurgent outfit have claimed responsibility for the bomb, police have not ruled out the involvement of ULFA, who have a major presence in upper Assam.
Following the incident, security was tightened in other parts of upper Assam.
Five insurgent outfits of the region and Paresh Baruah faction of the ULFA had asked the people to boycott Republic Day celebrations and observe a general shutdown in the region.
