New Delhi: Assam was on Thursday heading for a hung Assembly with the ruling Congress having won 55 seats and the Opposition AGP winning 26 and others have won 41.

Congress bigwigs Digvijay Singh and Chandan Bagchi are already in the state and some serious sessions of power brokering is in store.

Despite Tarun Gogoi being the incumbent chief minister, the party's not projected anyone for the top post yet.

"Views of legislators will be taken and forwarded to Sonia Gandhi, and she will take a decision," Digvijay Singh said.

With key ally, Bodo Progressive People's Front coming through with 12 seats, Congress is in a good position to put together a stable coalition in Assam.

And then there are the independents who can also be approached. So, the Congress need not necessarily plead with the Asom United Democratic Front for external support.

Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, too, has reasons good enough to smile because his main adversary in the party and state Congress president, Bhubaneswar Kalita lost in Rangia.

Gogoi won from Titabor but says it’s the High Command, who has to decide on who will be the next Chief minister.

The Congress has almost managed to buck the anti-incumbency trend. And if the Karbi and Bodo groups lend support, the Chief Minister's job is going to be much easier.
