Guwahati: The end of harvest season is celebrated as Bhogali Bihu in Assam. And while Bihu remains the main festival of this north-eastern state the festival too has undergone transition over the years.
Celebrated as Bhogali Bihu, this is the time to enjoy after all the hard-work in the fields. Bihu marks the end of harvest and beginning of festivities— much of which takes in place around huts or Bhelagahars that are made especially for Bihu and later burnt down.
Bhelaghars Bihu revelers come from far and wide. During the festival —friends, relatives and neighbours meet to feast and make merry. The burning of the hut signifying the end of the old and the start of a new beginning.
Special preparations all over Assam mark the arrival of Bihu. Bihu markets spring all over the state— selling homemade jaggery, sweets and cheetal mach or fish, the demand for which multiplies during this festival.
According to a Bihu outlet owner Purabi Deka— "In Bihu farmers bring their produce from the last harvest, and special Bihu delicacies like pitha and laru and many more are made from that, it's always a treat to have."
Bihu also celebrates togetherness, with people meeting near and dear ones—renewing old ties and making new ones.
Guwahati resident, Sanghamitra Deka says, "During the Bihu festival we visit our relatives and distribute sweets like pitha and laru."
