Guwahati: For the Hindi-speaking people of Karbi Anglong in Assam, fear, helplessness and despair are everyday emotions. The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the Karbi Longri Liberation Front (KNLF) have joined forces against them, and there is no help in sight.
On Wednesday night when some of these migrant workers were getting ready for dinner they were attacked by a group of militants.
"Four militants went on one side, four of them surrounded us. They asked the girl to fetch water and killed her,” says a resident of Karbi Anglong.
Eight people were killed in that attack that took place on Wednesday night But that's not been the end of it. Thirteen people were killed on Friday in militant strikes at Dolamura, Bokajan and Diphu.
In fact, nearly 25 people have lost their lives since Sunday last, making it one of the bloodiest weeks in Assam since the ULFA started its hate campaign against the Hindi speaking populace in January.
Now, with the KNLF and the ULFA coming together, ideology seems to have taken a backseat.
" Everyone is conspiring together,” says another resident of Karbi Anglong.
But its not just attack on Hindi speaking people. ULFA has been triggering blasts across Assam as part of its now almost ritualistic run-up to Independence Day. And police checks in the city unfortunately offer little protection to common people.
