Assam violence: PM's helicopter returns mid-way from Kokrajhar

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to the violence-affected region of Kokrajhar in Assam was cut short on Saturday after his helicopter developed a technical snag and could not land there.

The helicopter had to return mid-way to Guwahati.

Sources said that the PM will now hold the pre-scheduled meetings in the capital, that he was supposed to hold later in the day, and then head to Kokrajhar.

Large-scale violence, which has rocked the state, particularly Kokrajhar and Chirang districts, has claimed 50 lives so far.

The PM is scheduled to visit a relief camp at Falakati and review the situation with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD) leaders at Kokrajhar.

He is also expected to address a high-level review meeting with Gogoi, state cabinet ministers and top police and Army officials.
