Assam polls: violence reported from Rangiya

Guwahati: Voters clashed with police personnel in Rangiya in Kamrup district of Assam on Monday during the second and final phase of elections to the 126-member Assembly. The incident happened when some voters were allegedly manhandled by the police, who were trying to maintain order at a polling station.

The voters protested and had a heated exchange of words with the policemen who had allegedly manhandled them. After the altercation some of the voters burnt police vans present at the polling booth.

Meanwhile, voting is on in 64 constituencies where 496 candidates are in the fray and over 96 lakh voters are eligible to cast their ballots in over 12,500 polling stations.

The ruling Congress is trying to score a hat-trick of Assembly election victories in the state.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is contesting in 58 seats, Trinamool Congress in 58, while the Asom Gana Parishad has 53 candidates.

Former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta was among the early voters at a polling station in Nagaon.
