Guwahati: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday announced a Rs 300 crore relief package for the violence-affected regions of Assam, describing the conflict as "unacceptable" and a "blot on the nation".
"This conflict is unacceptable and must come to an end. We must do everything possible to bring relief to those who have been displaced."
The PM then proceeded to announce Rs 100 crore relief assistance for Assam, another Rs 100 crore as special assistance for development programmes in the affected regions and yet another Rs 100 crore under the Indira Avas Yojana.
The PM further announced Rs 2 lakh to each family that lost a loved one as compensation and immediate relief of Rs 1 lakh to those who were seriously injured and Rs 30,000 to those whose houses were damaged. An aid of Rs 20,000 was announced for those whose houses were partially damaged.
Saying that the guilty must be brought to book, the PM said that the Centre will work closely with the state government to normalise the situation.
