New Delhi: NASA engineers and astronauts are working on innovative ways to fix a tear in the heat shield of the shuttle Atlantis which had taken off last Friday.
One of the methods that could be used to fix the tear would be using a stainless steel wire serving as thread and an instrument with a rounded end resembling a small needle.
This is usually used to repair tears in astronaut suits but may work here as well.
Earlier, duct tape was found unusable in the vacuum of space.
A final decision is still pending on what would be the best way to deal with the problem.
Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams is on board the shuttle and her return from a record six months in space has been put off until this heat shield is repaired.
