Madrid: Atletico Madrid have reinforced their already solid defense by signing Martin Demichelis to a one-year contract. Demichelis arrives just days after Atletico signed Spain striker David Villa to replace Radamel Falcao.
The 32-year-old Demichelis, an Argentine international, spent the past 2 ½ seasons with Malaga, helping the team qualify for the Champions League for the first time where it reached the quarterfinals last campaign.
He also played at River Plate and then for Bayern Munich from 2003-11, winning four Bundesliga titles.
Atletico will compete in the Champions League this season after finishing the Spanish league in third place. In two seasons under Argentine coach Diego Simeone, Atletico has won the Europa League, European Super Cup and the Copa del Rey.
