Aussie court to decide if Haneef gets visa power

New Delhi: A court in Brisbane will on Wednesday decide on whether to return the Australian work visa of Indian doctor Mohamed Haneef, arrested and later released in connection with the failed UK terror plot.

Haneef was cleared of terror-related charges and allowed to return to India on July 27.

His lawyers say Australian Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews had ''improperly'' cancelled his work visa so Haneef could be detained when he was granted bail by the Brisbane Magistrates Court.

The lawyers also are expected to argue against the Andrews’ stand that Haneef had close links with his second cousins and Glasgow terror suspects Kafeel and Sabeel Ahmed.

Haneef was arrested at Brisbane International Airport on July 2.

Meanwhile supporters of Haneef rallied outside the Federal Court in Brisbane ahead of the appeal against his visa cancellation.

News agencies report more than a dozen people attended the rally condemning Andrews' decision to cancel Haneef's working visa.

The supporters had also planned a "Honk for Haneef", but it received little support from Brisbane drivers.

Queensland Greens Senate candidate Larissa Waters said Haneef was being treated as a political football. "There is a concern that the process of justice has been altered because of political interference," she said.
