Aussie tunes into India's local chords

Jaisalmer: It's not everyday that you come across a foreigner who can sing the signature tune of the Rajasthan desert.

But at the annual Desert festival in Jaisalmer, among the folk performers, it’s actually a tourist from Australia who has mastered popular Rajasthani numbers.

Sarah came to Jaisalmer over a year ago and instantly fell in love with the local music. She looked for someone who could teach her these songs and found Rukma, the first woman Manganiyar singer of the region.

Sarah started taking daily lessons from her, even if it meant living for weeks in the small border village of Ramsar.

“When I teach her Rajasthani songs she is very quick to catch the songs but otherwise when I speak to her in the same language she doesn't understand,” says Rukma.

Today Sarah can proudly share the stage with her teacher and with the music she's mastered over the past one year, she now feels confident to rock any party.

“Great rhythm, energy and melody and instruments and when everyone sings together in one party it's like a party or a community singing together, it's a great feeling,” says Sarah.
