Not austere yet: Ex-MPs occupy official homes

Neelu Vyas, CNN-IBN

New Delhi: A long list of ministers have not moved into their offical bungalows because these bungalows continue to be occupied by previous ministers who are not authorised to stay there.

Union Heavy Industries Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh has not been able to throw his weight in getting his official bungalow at 14 Akbar Road but only because that is occupied by fellow Congressman and former Panchayati Raj minister Mani Shankar Iyer. Vilasrao Deshmukh pays the price, staying on in a dingy BHEL guesthouse.

But the question is, why is Mani Shankar Iyer not budging from 14 Akbar Road even though he is no longer a minister?

He says that he has been allotted the bungalow where Margaret Alva is currently staying and is waiting for her to vacate it.

Governor of Uttarakhand, Margaret Alva may be off to cooler climes but she is not satisfied with Raj Bhavan alone and wants a Delhi address as well.

CNN-IBN is told by people inside her bungalow that she is in the process of vacating, but when is not clear. So as of now, 12 Safdarjung Lane is Margaret Alva's address in Delhi.

So where does the buck stop? Nowhere it seems. This is just one examples of musical chairs, but there is no end to the long list of ministers in waiting for their accommodations.

A few days ago, CNN-IBN had shown how six ex-MP's and nine ex-ministers are still occupying palatial bungalows in Lutyens zone although they have lost the elections.

Austerity seems to have taken off in economy flights but Lutyens bungalows are too tempting to let go of.

There could be two ways of looking at this waiting game - some would call it reluctance on the part of ministers not moving to their official bungalows because of the inauspicious month of pitra paksha, others would say that Jaipal Reddy is too soft to crack the whip on his fellow brethren.

In both events, musical bungalows seems to be a popular game, but how long can it go is something to watch out for?
