Attacks on Indians racist: Australian envoy

New Delhi: Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi on Thursday took up the issue of attacks on Indians in Australia with the Australian High Commissioner.

Vayalar Ravi met Australian High Commissioner John McCarthy in New Delhi and urged him to ensure the safety of Indian students studying in Australia.

While McCarthy admitted that there was an element of racism involved in the attack on Indians, most of the attacks were primarily criminal in nature.

NO WORRY: Australian High Commissioner John McCarthy says measures are being taken to ensure safety of Indians.

He assured Ravi that measures are being taken to ensure the safety of Indian students.

"Our universities are world standard and Australia is still one of the safest countries in the world. Student must exercise caution while travelling at certain places at certain times. Help lines are also being set up for them in Hindi and English. Racism may be an element in the recent attacks but they were primarily criminal in nature. Some amount of racism exists in every country," said McCarthy.

Earlier, Ravi had said that the Union Government would keep track of all students studying in Australia.

At least nine Indian students have been attacked in the past one month with the latest case coming to light on Tuesday when a 21-year-old was slashed with a box-cutter by a group of men on a college campus in Melbourne, the capital of Victoria where most of the attacks have occurred.
