New Delhi: A whiff of a multi-crore scam is emerging from the canteen of Delhi Assembly and the Delhi Development Authority. A late night Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raid blew the lid off yet another land scam in the Capital on Wednesday night.

The CBI raided the residence of Delhi Assembly canteen-owner and one-time autorickshaw driver Ashok Malhotra.

What the investigative agency found suggested that Malhotra’s taste in vehicles had changed considerably – more than 50 cars and 10 motorcycles were recovered, all bearing special VIP number plates.

In fact, Malhotra's booty has now become his neighbours' envy. “All we knew was that he ran a canteen at the Delhi Assembly and earlier he used to drive an autorickshaw but we didn't have a clue about all these cars,” Malhotra’s neighbour said.

CBI sources revealed that over 5,000 land documents were also recovered in the raid.

The CBI on July 26 had filed a chargesheet against Malhotra and five DDA employees, including three former deputy directors, who had siphoned off crores by selling plots meant for allocation to displaced slum dwellers.

The investigative agency found that the plots had been allotted to fictitious persons.

Malhotra's connection to the Delhi Assembly could also indicate the involvement of politicians in the scam.

And in what could be one of the biggest land scams involving the DDA – the body the World Bank once called the most corrupt organisation in India – Malhotra's fleet of cars could be just the beginning.
