Palode (Kerala): She is 104-years-old. But age surely hasn’t caught up with her.
Maathimuthi is known as the Queen among tribal singers in Kerala. She received the 2004 state award for tribal folklore but her talents have not helped her make a decent living.
And all the tall promises made by the state government so far are yet to be delivered to her.
“The former Congress minister promised a concrete-house and a tarred road leading to my house just before last year's assembly election. But since then nothing has happened. Neither the minister nor any of his people have turned up here to see the condition in which we live,” says Maathimuthi.
Governments have come and gone, but for Maathimuthi, poverty has been a constant partner.
And the only things that shine inside her house are her trophies that Maathimuthi holds up with great pride even in the midst of her worries.
She may hold the awards close to her heart, but for a 104-old-year woman who cannot even manage a single meal a day, what difference do the awards make?
So it is up to the government to ponder over the issue now.
