Manchester: Britain's favourite ’street’ has a new Indian face!
Actress Ayesha Dharker is the latest Asian character in the country's longest running television soap Coronation Street.
Ayesha plays the role of Tara Mandal, the daughter of an Asian family on the programme.
“My character is connected with another character who has been on the show for a long time. Dev, who runs the corner shop behind us. He has had a relationship with an ex-Bollywood actress, who is in fact my mum in the show. Then comes the daughter, Tara, who wants to make a fresh start after a troubled relationship,” says Ayesha.
The first episode of Coronation Street or Corrie as its called, was aired in December 1960 and is still one of the highest rated programmes in Britain with the average viewership of about 11 million.
Ayesha is likely to be on the show until the end of January next year.
This is the legendary Coronation Street that has dominated British prime time TV for nearly half a century.
Characters have come and gone and storylines have changed but the ‘street’ has remained the only constant character of the show.
Now it is ready for its latest Asian resident, Tara Mandal.
