Jammu: It’s been 60 years since Indian Independence and the young in the country might still be looking for their national hero.
To help them pick some from the past, there’s history that is traveling on wheels around the country.
Images of the struggles of freedom fighters are mounted on 12 rail coaches of Azadi Express, launched to commemorate 150 years of the 1857 mutiny and 60 years of freedom.
“When you go from coach 1-12, you travel through years of India's history, particularly the era prior to 1857, the Gandhian era, Nehruvian ear, the heights of Indian economy and where we are now,” says deputy director general, Directorate of Audio-Visual Publicity (DAVP), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, S K Rao.
Azadi Express, which started its journey on Bhagat Singh's birth anniversary September 28 this year, will visit 69 destinations throughout the country, touching all the important locations associated with the freedom struggle.
The journey concludes in May 2008. “The last lap is from Meerut to Delhi on May 10, the day of the Great March of 1857,” says Rao.
The exhibition also includes the history of the national flag and some rare historic documents. The idea is to revive the spirit of nationalism, especially amongst the young.
“They will get a lot of inspiration of the sacrifices that our elders made for the country,” says Chander Moli, a visitor.
To put together 150 years of a country into 12 coaches isn’t an easy task but this exhibition is a small attempt to take the much-forgotten history back to the people.
