Chennai: Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's elder son M K Azhagiri, once seen as the troublesome member of Tamil Nadu’s first political family, is now officially in favour.
Last week, Azhagiri was appointed the ruling DMK's organisational secretary for the south zone of the state. The appointment recognised of Azhagiri’s influence in the party, as he in the past he has often been in news for wrong reasons.
Azhagiri once openly rebelled against the party and has often been accused of asserting himself through violent means. Political analysts believe Azhagiri has not completely accepted his younger brother M K Stalin as the heir to their father’s political legacy. For the record though Azhagiri says that he has no political differences with his brother.
"There could be problems within the family. Which family doesn't have problems, but there is no problem as far as politics is concerned," he told CNN-IBN.
As the brothers dominate the DMK, their children too are waiting to make their political debut. Stalin's son Udayanidhi and Azhagiri's daughter Kayalvizhi and son Dayanidhi Azhagiri are all interested in playing a political role. Azhagiri does not rule out a role for his children in the coming general elections.
"Its too early to talk about that. The elections haven't even been announced yet. There will be a party meet to decide who will contest," says Azhagiri.
Azhagiri was seen as a man who had fought against his cousins Dayanidhi Maran and Kalanidhi Maran. The fight that led to the exit of Dayanidhi Maran from the Union Cabinet in 2007. Marans are back together in the family now and Azhagiri says that the differences have been sorted out and buried.
