Madurai: The temple town of Madurai is one constituency that the Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) would surely want to win as M K Azhagiri, son of M Karunanidhi, is contesting from the seat.
The elder son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi sees Madurai as a launch pad for Delhi and the entire DMK machinery is working overtime to see he wins.
The contest has also got dirty and there were allegations that Azhagiri bribed voters
"These are all stories made by the media and Opposition candidates. They just want to defame me. They should talk about what they are going to do for the people rarther than try and win votes through such meaningless allegations," said Azhagiri.
His rival's campaign is subdued and almost silent. Communist Party of India-Marxist candidate P Mohan, who is also the sitting MP, has recovered from a surgery. He lost precious time but other local leaders especially of alliance partner All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) have chipped in
"I have been here for the last 40 years. People of Madurai... each and every one know me. Due to my health I could not campaign. But I am confident people will accept me," hoped P Mohan.
In 1999 and 2004 Mohan won from Madurai with DMK's support and Azhagiri was the chief strategist then.
But with the Left parties going with the AIADMK this time, it would be interesting to see if Azhagiri would pull it off against his former friend
Elections in Madurai is perhaps more crucial for Azhagiri than for his own party because only a victory in Madurai will spiral the DMK leader from being a backroom manager of the party in Tamil Nadu to its strongman in Delhi.
