New Delhi: Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi, who is also facing the charges of inciting people on the basis of places of birth, residence etc with the intent to causing riot, said that Mumbai police is yet to get in touch with him.
"Nobody from the police is in touch with me. Police told me that they will arrest me at a right time. I appeal to people to maintain peace. I will apply for a bail but not for anticipatory bail," Azmi said on Wednesday.
Azmi also said that indulging in violence against other communities is no solution.
"Sena people should press for a law. Rioting isn't a solution for all this," the Sp leader said.
Azmi also blamed the Maharashtra government for not doing enough to protect the North Indians in the state from the violence unleashed against the community by Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).
"The police and the government aren't doing enough to bring the peace back. I haven't done anything wrong. They want to arrest me just to balance their act," he said.
"It isn't for political mileage. We don't want votes and appeal to our workers to hold peaceful demonstrations," Azmi clarified.
FIR has been filed against both Azmi and Raj Thackeray under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. A police team is already at the MNS supremo’s residence in Shivaji Park to record his statement.
