Railways Minister, Lalu Yadav went to the extent of asking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to arrest Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi for his involvement in post Godhra violence in 2002.
"Narendra Modi should be arrested immediately,” said Lalu.
But is he should be asked about punishing those who were the architects of the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992 then he may keep silent.
One reason why he and many of his other UPA allies are silent is because of the impending Gujarat elections.
There is a growing fear of Modi doing well because of the polarised society in the state.
The low decibel response of the Congress to the Tehelka sting is just an example that is why the Home Ministry finds itself in a bind and is delaying the inevitable.
CNN-IBN has learnt that a record 42nd extension will be given to the Justice Liberhan Commission.
Justice Liberhan himself is abroad but in August CNN-IBN had first reported some of the key findings of the probe.
These are the people who are going to be indicted:
- Uma Bharti: The sadhvi, the rabble-rouser, known for making inflammatory speeches.
- Ashok Singhal: The senior VHP leader whose fanaticism and statements preceding September 6 incited kar sevaks.
- Kalyan Singh: The then chief minister of UP....who sided with the lawbreakers......
- Murli Manohar Joshi: The senior BJP leader then with a remarkable following.
- And most importantly LK Advani the architect of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement was not considered as a conspirator.
"Its up to the central government to decide,” says Congress spokesperson, Abhishek Manu Singhvi.
"It just shows the double standards of the Congress party,” counters secretary, BJP National, Prabhat Jha.
So will we ever get to know the truth behind the demolition of the Babri Mosque or will it be that modern day political compulsions will score over old political controversies?
The more disturbing fact now though is that there that the utility of such commissions itself is now under the scanner.
