Mumbai: His last film brought back the memories of emergency and naxalite movement. And with his new film, Khoya Khoya Chand, director Sudhir Mishra is travelling back in time again.

It’s a story of a bygone era brought back to life at Mumbai's Filmistan Studios.

After showing the 70's angst in his critically acclaimed last film Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Mishra is going back to Bollywood of the 50's for his new film.

The film captures the love story between an actress and a writer-director with the film industry as its backdrop.

While actor Soha Ali Khan plays the actress, Nikhat, Shiney Ahuja is the writer-director Zafar.

“This is about passionate people. It’s like an ode to the 50's when people were less conscious of practicality. They were passionate about their work. They gave all to their films, their neck was on line, sometimes their life was on the line. There were people who sold studios to make films,” explains Mishra.

Soha says it’s the most difficult role she has played so far and had to go through dancing and Urdu diction classes to prepare for it.

Though Mishra’s original choice for the role was Vidya Balan, because of date problems, the part came Soha's way. Helping her prepare for the role is her mother Sharmila Tagore.

“Even though this is slightly before her time, it is closer to her time than mine. So, she has many memories of how they used to dress and carry themselves. At that time actresses had so much grace and there was so much emphasis on long takes and everybody knew dancing. So, they relied more on performance and not on editing and glamour and all that,” says Soha.

The film is produced by Prakash Jha and is being made on a small Rs 6-7 crore budget.

The shooting wraps up by December and the film is slated to release in the first quarter of next year.

So, get ready to go back to the era that continues to inspire every generation of filmmakers.
