Bad news for Copenhagen: Climate change deal looks shaky

New Delhi: Time is running out to save the Earth. Barely 20 days from now, world leaders will come together to ink a new deal to tackle climate change, but members of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), including US, have made clear that they are not yet ready to take up specific commitments to reduce carbon emissions and agree that it's better to push the deadline further into the next year.

“We are trying to get to an agreement, especially in the financial part to guarantee economic incentives so countries can engage in emissions cuts,” Chile Foreign Minister Mariano Fernandez said.

Pressure is mounting over the industrialised countries to agree to specific carbon cuts and also fund the poor countries in tackling global warming. But APEC countries which contribute to as much as 60 per cent of the world's carbon emissions have in fact dropped a reference from their declaration to cut global emissions by 50 per cent by 2050.

Climate experts in India are worried that this will slow down the climate talks.

“Obama had said that US will take the lead and their position will cast a shadow over Copenhagen,” climate change expert RK Pachauri said.

Hope is fading now that a miracle will take place in the final round of climate change negotiations to take place in Copenhagen soon. As heavy brainstorming continues to solve the global challenge of climate change, it is the Earth which may end up as the biggest loser.
