Bajrang Dal leader held after Centre advisory

Bangalore: After the Centre's threat to intervene under Article 355, the BJP-led Karnataka Government has pulled up its socks and has decided to put a check on the ongoing communal tension in the state.

Friday night's arrest of Bajrang Dal heavywieght Mahendra Kumar by the Karnataka Police was the ramification of constant pressure from the UPA.

Mahendra Kumar was arrested after the BJP government in the state was put under pressure to crack the whip on hardline Hindu outfits.

The arrest came after the Centre threatened to intervene under Article 355 if attacks on Christians continued in the state.

"The Central Government has pressurised the state government to arrest me. I am ready to go to jail for the sake of Hindus. Congress and JD(S) will never speak about the violence done unto us by the Christians. They just keep denouncing the Bajrang Dal," was Mahendra Kumar's parting refrain as he was escorted to the police station.

Mahendra Kumar had openly claimed responsibility for the attacks on churches in South Karnataka on September 14.

The Christians allege they are being targeted with the tacit support of the BJP government.

With the Centre threatening to intervene, the state administration has decided to play it safe. A judicial probe has been ordered and the Government continues to defend itself.

Karnataka Law Minister Suresh Kumar said, "We have ensured anyway that law and order is maintained in the state. The Union Cabinet should realise that we are doing all that we can do to ensure social harmony in the state."

The Mangalore Superintendent of Police, Satish Kumar said, Mahendra Kumar was arrested for disturbing peace.

"He was arrested by the South Kannada Police on September 19 for creating communal tension, criminal conspiracy and abetment."

With Mahendra Kumar's arrest, the state government hopes to show that it is unbiased and that it will take action on anyone who breaks law and order in the state.
