New Delhi: As the evidence against Hindu terror groups mount, the Centre is now stepping in to control the situation. The Home Ministry has reportedly decided to probe the role of such groups, the Bajrang Dal in particular, and written to all state governments.
For the first time the Centre has said that Bajrang Dal could be linked to not just communal violence but the recent bomb blasts as well.
The Home Ministry's letter says: There has been alleged involvement of the Bajrang Dal and other such organisations in communal violence and bomb blasts.
It letter also said that such groups have tarnished the image of the country internationally.
The Centre has now asked for details of cases registered along with the names of the accused and their organisations.
Ironically, the letter comes soon after the Centre rejected Gujarat's controversial terror law, terming it as draconian. It reportedly advised President Pratibha Patil to return the GUJCO Bill to the state assembly.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Shivraj Patil is now focussing the spotlight on Hindu terror groups after accusing politicians of paying lip service on banning Hindu fundamentalist groups.
“State government has not asked for a ban. Politicians are asking for it,” Patil said.
However, the BJP was quick to react to these allegations. “If they want to do a misadventure then let them do. The reply will come from the people of India,” BJP Spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.
Patil's letter will put at least the UPA-ruled states in a quandary. They fear that pushing for a ban could polarise voters.
Hindu fundamentalist groups are spreading their net across the country making no distinction as to which government is in power in a particular state. But the question is why aren’t states, governed by the UPA and its allies, in a position to take action.
The answer perhaps lies in the fact that in election time, talk comes cheap while action can prove to be costly.
