Mumbai: A closure report has been filed in the Palghar Facebook case in which two girls were arrested for posting comments about the bandh imposed after Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray's death. On November 18, police arrested the Palghar girl who posted a comment on her Facebook questioning the shutdown after Thackeray's death on November 17 and when he was given a public cremation the next day. Her friend, who had 'liked' the Facebook comment, was also arrested.
The Supreme Court had later issued notices to the Centre, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Delhi and Puducherry governments over the petition filed by a Delhi University student, Shreya Singhal, challenging the Information Technology Act. The court has asked Maharashtra to explain arrest of the two girls.
The girls were arrested on the November 19 and released only after paying Rs 15,000 bonds each. Meanwhile, the Thane Superintendent of Police and Palghar police station Sub-Inspector were later suspended for disobeying the orders of superiors while arresting two girls for a Facebook post on Thackeray.
