New York: South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon is the new United Nations Secretary-General.
The UN General Assembly confirmed Ban's appointment by acclamation after all 192 members approved of him.
As he gets ready to take office on New Year's Day, he has several issues already on his plate – North Korea, Iran and the Middle East, among others.
Ban Ki-Moon gave a glimpse into his thinking at his first press conference in New York.
“The world must give a clear, strong and unified response to North Korea so it does not continue with its negative activities that may complicate the situations,” said Ban Ki-Moon.
From Palestine to UN reform, Ban Ki-moon was optimistic about various thorny issues, but avoided any specifics.
Asked if he thought the Security Council that nominated him was legitimate, an indirect inquiry of his views on expansion of the body, Ban would only say.
“The views of the Security Council have generally reflected the wishes of the general members about the future Secretary-General,” said Ban.
The media in South Korea had nicknamed Ban Ki-Moon the slippery eel. And he seemed to live up to his name in his first press conference at the United Nations.
To a direct question as to whether he believed in God, he said this was not the right forum to air his personal beliefs.
