Bangaladesh curfew bid to curb riots

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The military regime in Bangladesh has imposed an indefinite curfew in Dhaka and five other cities from Wednesday following protests by students.

Students in universities in the cities were told to quit their dormitories by 8:00 pm, when the curfew began, said Fahim Munaim, a spokesman for the caretaker government of Fakhruddin Ahmed.

"All universities and the colleges of the six cities have also been ordered closed for an indefinite period," he said.

Commentators said the protests, which started at Dhaka University on Monday and have spread across the country, might pose a serious challenge to the government.

The fighting followed a troop assault on students after they had protested against the presence of soldiers at a football match at Dhaka University.

The government withdrew the army from Dhaka University campus on Tuesday night and threatened offenders with punishment, but riots continued.

A rickshaw puller was killed during clashes between police and students in northwestern Rajshahi city. At least 100 students were hurt there. Another 100 people were injured in Dhaka when police fired rubber bullets and teargas.

Students also clashed with police in southern Barisal and Khulna towns, in northeastern Sylhet town and at Jahangirnagar University at Savar, 40 kilometers north of Dhaka.
