Bangalore cops guide city traffic through Internet

Bangalore: The next time you get caught in Bangalore's legendary traffic jams, remember you could have saved yourself the trouble by logging onto the Internet!

Police in the city are now using information technology to deal with the traffic mess. The department is spending over Rs 2 crore to put in place surveillance and enforcement cameras.

“We have already put 40 on the road and by the end of July another 40 will be up which means 80 cameras now. So live feedback is coming into one place which is a traffic management centre,” IPG & ACP Praveen Sood said.

Photographs from the cameras are uploaded every 15 seconds onto the Bangalore Transport Information System (BTIS) website and commuters can easily access them from their mobile phones too.

The police have already tied up with mobile service providers like Airtel and Mapunity for the service and they hope to get on board other mobile operators in the next few months.

“Administration can respond to it better so that planning can be improved based on the data. People can now have real time knowledge of what is happening on the roads,” Ashwin Mahesh from Mapunity said.

The police say that the technology will be particularly helpful during the monsoon. They also hope the public-private partnership will help in designing a more efficient traffic system.
