Bangalore cops use technology to check speed

New Delhi: Nineteen people dead and 32 injured over the last one week - the highway to the new Bangalore International Airport has become virtually a death trap. The hassled police are now changing gears. They are turning to technology in their attempt to check overspeeding drivers.

The laser gun, the latest weapon in the traffic police's armoury is a device that calculates the speed of a moving vehicle and spots the adrenaline-pumped drivers. The machine can catch up to five overspeeding vehicles per second.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bangalore West Division, PH Rane says, "With the help of the interceptor we have been able to reduce the overspeeding vehicles and also maintain discipline on the road."

The police have booked over 5,300 drivers for overspeeding and earned almost Rs 14 lakh since April in fines using the laser gun. However, the highway can still be tempting for drivers who like to step on the gas.

"Rules have to be followed, but the problem is that half of the stretch to the city is always affected by traffic jams. Then you hit this smooth stretch and you tend to speed up because people want to get to the airport in time," says a fined driver, Abhishek.

The police now plan to install more speed interceptors across the city. They say controlling traffic has never been so easy, thanks to these high-tech devices.
