Bangalore: Not just in Delhi, but traders are facing the demolition squad in upmarket Shadashivnagar area of Bangalore also where former chief minister S M Krishna and late matinee idol Raj Kumar own houses and several ministers live even today.

But public sector banks, ATMs and small shops serving everyday needs have been covered under the city corporation's sealing drive, which started on Saturday. However, the High Court has temporarily stayed the drive in the case of banks and ATMs.

Bangalore City Corporation Joint Commissioner N Jayaram says, “Around 95 cases we have identified. Out of 95 around 70 people have rectified it. Remaining 40 to 45 people have taken stay from the High Court, rest of them we will seal.”

The sealing drive started after a PIL was filed by the Shadashivnagar Residents' Welfare Association but several residents feel that the association was wrong in doing so

The issue has spilt area residents.

Resident N Suresh says, “If I have to go to a medicine shop should I go two km away in a vehicle.”

While the HC stay has given a temporary reprieve, the issue is not closed.

“After the sealing drive we have received complaints from other areas. We will survey those areas as well,” Jayaram adds.

This controversy is clearly far from over. More can be expected in weeks to come.
