Bangalore finds a quick fix for traffic trouble

Bangalore: It looks like any other flyover and underpass, but it was built in less than a week. The Bangalore City Corporation plans to build more such underpasses in the city over the next two months.

The Corporation says it's a simple procedure, each concrete block is pre-fabricated by companies and then they're all put together with nuts and bolts like lego sets.

Eight such underpasses are planned by January-end at crossings already identified.

One, set up for demonstration, has been in use for the last couple of weeks.

Concerns remain on whether such fix-it structures are safe for heavy traffic but Corporation officials are confident.

“We're doing this in consultation with Torsteel Foundation. They have expertise in such structures. They have done tests to see it’s safe for vehicles and our engineers have ensure it meets Indian road congress class A standards,” says K R Srinivasa, Special Commissioner (projects), Bangalore City Corporation.

The Corporation's claims are backed by some experts.

“Here one can drive nails in and can be done at 3 minutes per bar and then you can short-grid it. Once that's done, its ready in 24 hours. As far as the main road is concerned, it'll become signal-free and that's great,” says Professor B R Srinivasa Murthy from Civil Engineering Department at Indian Institute of Science.

They say Rome was not built in a day but the Bangalore City Corporation is trying to rewrite that rule.

These quick-fix solutions are being thought up to tide over the traffic crisis, particularly on the Bellary road that leads up to the new international airport. Nearly 50,000 people will use the road once its open in April.
