Bangalore: For the last two weeks Bangalore's been literally rained out and the city's civic authorities are on a drive to demolish structures which are blocking the passage of water in the storm water drains. But the corporation's crackdown on such structures has brought on more problems for the civic authorities.
Many like Bhairappa – whose home was demolished on Sunday as part of the Bangalore Mahanagar Palike's drive against buildings constructed on storm water drains in South Bangalore – are trying to salvage whatever they can from what was once their home.
Bhairappa and his family have now taken shelter in a shed in the area. With no prior information about the demolitions, Bhairappa is now struggling to come to terms with the situation.
“There is no money. It's a huge problem for us to even get food. We don't know what to do or where to go. Someone please help us,” he appeals.
Nine buildings have come down so far in the Mahanagara Palike's crackdown on encroached structures.
However, some of the these buildings had their construction plans approved by the civic authorities but there is no clear answer as to why it took the Corporation so long to realise that constructions on storm water drains are indeed dangerous.
“Whether CMC should have taken a decision? That I can’t say,” Joint Commissioner, BBMP, Venkataraman Nayak says.
The heavy downpour had already wreaked havoc on residents. Now, these demolitions have not just added to the chaos but the BBMP also has to provide alternate accommodation to those rendered homeless.
So, this is yet another civic mess for a city that has got enough civic problems already.
