Bangalore hit and run case: 4 dead, 1injured

Bangalore A speeding Honda Accord car climbed onto the footpath and knocked down three morning joggers and a cyclist fatally in Bangalore. The 30-year-old Karthik Somaiah who was behind the wheels has been sent to judicial custody.

Reports say that Karthik was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

All four were crushed to death under the wheels of the car in Bangalore's Indiranagar area, but KK Reddy, a victim, survived to tell the tale.

"There was a foot path 18 inch above ground and the headlights were on when the car climbed on the footpath I realised the gravity, and my leg came in line with the car. Imagine at what speed he must have been, after hitting me he hit a cyclist and mowed down three people," Said Reddy.

Somaiah who had escaped from the scene, later surrendered before the Indiranagar police. It's turning out to be another case of drunk and driving as the preliminary reports suggest that Somaiah was under the influence of alcohol.

Somaiah works for a private consultant company

"There are still traces of alcohol, 12 hours after the accident. So, you can draw your inferences about the level of alcohol content. We will be sending him to the hospital for a confirmed report," said Addl Commssioner of Police (Traffic), Praveen Sood.

While the family members of those who died in the incident are demanding a thorough probe, Somaiah's lawyer says his client is innocent; he lost control while trying to avoid a bi-cycle.
