Kozhikode: The suspected Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) activist Yahya Kammakutty, who was arrested in Bangalore late on Thursday night, was associated with Jamat-e-Islami earlier, a top police official said on Saturday.

Kozhikode District Rural Superintendent of Police K Natarajan said that an initial probe had revealed that Yahya was an activist of Jamat-e-Islami during his student days.

He said the police team had launched further investigation at his native village Mukkom in Kozhikode district of Kerala to find out more details about his activities during his visits there.

Natarajan said the Bangalore police did not contact the local police in connection with the investigation so far.

Earlier, Yahya was remanded to Corps Of Detectives (CoD) custody till March 6 in Bangalore.

He was produced before the First Class Judicial Magistrate at his residence around 0400 hrs IST and later taken to Vidyagiri police station at Dharwad.

The CoD team is likely to take him to Castlerock, a place on Karnataka-Goa border, where a SIMI meeting was held recently, a police source said.

Police suspect that Yahya heads the banned SIMI in Karnataka.
