Bangalore: The inaugural flight will take off from Bangalore’s new international airport on March 30 but it will be a long trip to the terminal.
The airport is 40 km away from the city and takes up to two hours to reach it. The government forgot to build shorter connecting roads, say Bangalore residents.
Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairperson and Managing Director of BIOCON, says poor connectivity beats the very purpose of a new airport. “I think BIAL (Bangalore International Airport Ltd.) has done a fabulous job of building a new airport but I think the government of Karnataka has fallen short of providing reasonable connectivity to the airport. If this is what the challenge is going to be for Banagloreans, isn’t it going to have an impact?” says Shaw.
A test drive from M G Road in the heart of Bangalore starting at 1300 hrs IST took a CNN-IBN reporter two hours. The Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd Airport is 12 km away from the city and takes 45 minutes to reach.
A lot of frequent flyers feel that the city should have two airports because there are more passengers for domestic airlines than international airlines.
