Bangladesh bracing for another day of protests

Dhaka: Bangladesh's main opposition BNP and its ally Jamaat-E-Islami have once again called for nationwide bandh and protest on Sunday, demanding death penalty for those found guilty of war crimes in 1971. However, normalcy prevailed in Dhaka barring few pockets.

The Shahbag movement which started a month back still continues, however, the nature of protests has now changed. More scattered protests can be seen because of fear of lives to activists and bloggers.

One of the blogger Rajib Haider, an architect, who was a key figure in organising the demonstrations, was stabbed to death on February 18. Two more bloggers where recently assaulted following which security to more prominent bloggers like Imran Sarkar has been increased.

Three million people died and thousands of women were raped. Some factions in what was then East Pakistan opposed the break with Pakistan. Jamaat denies accusations that it opposed independence and helped the Pakistani Army.
