Dhaka: The main Opposition party Awami League and its allies have now decided to boycott Bangladesh elections.
The leader of the Awami League and former Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, announced the boycott of general elections scheduled on January 22.
The Opposition alliance leaders say the caretaker government has failed to prove its neutrality.
“People should be able to elect a government of their own choice in a free and fair election,” said Hasina.
Hasina has demanded President Iajuddin Ahmed to step down as head of the interim government.
The Awami League alliance has accused Ahmed of running the government under the influence of Khaleda Zia.
Hasina's call for boycott comes just days after the Election Commission dismissed an appeal by her coalition partner to contest the polls.
“Election under President Iajuddin Ahmed cannot be impartial. We cannot give legitimacy to an election with illegal voters roll,” said Hasina.
The Awami League and its allies have called for a transport blockade throughout the country on January 7 and 8 in demand of electoral reforms.
The standoff had triggered street clashes last month, when one person was killed and more than 50 others injured in a nationwide transport strike called by the Awami League.
