New Delhi: The Bangladesh Supreme Court on Thursday stayed a High Court order granting detained former prime minister Sheikh Hasina bail in an extortion case.

Chief Justice Mohammad Ruhul Amin ordered the stay a day after a full bench heard the government appeal against the High Court order.

The HC order had also asked authorities not to proceed with the case under the tough emergency power rules until disposal of a pending writ filed by the ex-premier.

The Appellate Division, however, asked the "concerned parties" to dispose by August 14 the writ in High Court challenging the legal validity of the trial of the extortion case against Hasina under the emergency laws.

Bangladeshi businessman Azam J Chowdhury filed the case last month alleging that Hasina had "extorted" from him nearly 3 crore taka while her party was in power from 1996 to 2001.

Hasina, however, is also shown arrested under another "extortion" case filed by another businessman Noor Ali saying the ex-premier and several co-accused forced him to pay taka 5 crore and offer two apartments in Dhaka during the Awami League regime from 1996-2001.

Hasina, earlier, said the charges brought against her by the Bangladeshi businessman were "false" and part of a plot to "annihilate" her.
