Nokia battery makers pushed faulty products knowingly

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Nokia continues to grapple with the recall of over 46 million batteries used in its mobile phones. Matsushita Co, which manufactured the BL-5C batteries for Nokia, is now in the eye of a cellular storm.

Japanese media reports indicate that Matushita knew about the defects in the batteries as early as four months ago, but did not disclose it.

Nokia recalled the BL-5C lithium-ion batteries after it was discovered that they were overheating while being charged.

According to reports, Matsushita discovered the problem after two incidents of batteries exploding in Japan alone.

However they did not go public with this information. It was only on Tuesday that Nokia finally issued a worldwide recall of the defective batteries.

The offer to recall 46 million of its BL 5C batteris has made Nokia's squeaky, clean image slightly murky.

Posting notice ads that give clear instructions and assurances, has resulted inversely in a longer line of customers.

Nokia service centers across the country are now filled with customers who are not looking to buy phone but bringing in batteries they think may be faulty.

In June this year the International Herald Tribune had reported that cellphone batteries manufactured by Nokia and Motorola have failed latest safety tests, which showed they are prone to explode under certain conditions.
