New Delhi: BMW is all set to take over the number one position from German rival Mercedes Benz in India. At least that is what the makers hope to do by the end of the year.
In 2008, the BMW sold a total of 2,908 units, which is more than double its sales in 2007. While Mercedes Benz sold 3,625 units in 2008, a rise of 46 per cent from the year-earlier-period.
"We are expanding and are hoping to take the number one position this year in India," said president, BMW, Peter Kronschnabl.
BMW is bullish about the luxury car market in India.Though the company says the first half of 2009 will be challenging, growth may come in the second half.
"I feel the first quarter will be very tough that means dealers have to work very hard, but in second half of 2009, markets will smoothen," said Kronschnabl.
BMW has launched its new seven-series priced at about Rs 93 lakhs. It has also launched its new three series and plans to bring in X6 soon. Mercedes-Benz too plans to bring its new E and S class in 2009.
