Western Ghats (Karnataka): It's a long drive to Jog Falls, near Shimoga from Bangalore. But the lush greenery around it makes time fly. And the sight that one is greeted with on arrival makes it all the more worthwhile.
It's monsoon time, and the ghats are luring nature lovers once again. Almost everyone is familiar to the magnificent Jog Falls.
Although to experience the real charm and the magic of the falls, one needs to personally be there. And the best time is when the ghats get soaked in monsoon rains.
During the monsoons, there are many attractions that the ghats offer. One can witness the Sharavati river coming crashing down over 900 feet to form the four main falls — Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket. The sight is so spectacular that a Kannada movie even has a song dedicated to it.
These major falls are really treacherous during the monsoon. So one has to be really careful. But for those who simply cannot resist the temptation, there are many smaller and less treacherous waterfalls like the Unchali Falls to waddle in during monsoons.
Situated near Sirsi in North West Karnataka, Unchalli Falls can be reached only after a long slippery trek. But the hardship is nothing compared to the view that awaits travellers once they reach Unchalli.
During this time, when the ghats have rain-fed waterfalls, one should be totally equipped with all the necessary means and safety precautions should be well taken care of.
It's beyond doubt that the Western Ghats in Karnataka are a treat to the eye at any time of the year. But during the monsoons, the rain-swelled waterfalls only add to their magic. The view is just so spectacular that leaves no words to comment. All one can say is, it's very best.
