Mumbai: Two days after the transistor blast shook a tiny village in Maharashtra's Beed district, investigating agencies are tight-lipped about the exact nature of the explosion. A case has been registered against unknown persons under sections of the IPC and the Explosives Act. Teams of NIA and ATS have joined in the probe but officials say they are waiting for the forensic report before arriving at any conclusion.
Meanwhile, doctors attending to the injured, bus conductor Om Nimbalkar and his family members, say that all of them sustained corneal injuries and multiple shrapnel wounds. They have now been transferred to Mumbai's JJ Hospital for expert treatment.
Siddheshwar Birajdar, a superintendent at Swami Ramanand Tirth hospital said that it was highly unlikely that the injuries could have been caused by a battery blast. "A normal battery only has chemicals like nickel," he said.
Investigators hope that Nimbalkar's statement, after he gets better, combined with the forensic report could answer a few crucial questions like: Where did the transistor originate from? Was it kept on the bus at Kurla or elsewhere? Can a mere battery blast cause such serious injuries? If there were explosives, was it part of a consignment or meant for a specific purpose?
Investigators say the nature of injuries and intensity of the explosion do point towards the use of explosives. However, the involvement of any terrorist organisation can only be confirmed or ruled out after the forensic reports are available.
