Rajendra Kumar represents Delhi’s most recent villain- the Blueline bus driver. He drives a bus on route 982. It's not a job he loves, but it has been the only thing he's done for 15 years.
Says Rajendra, “Why are all the Blueline drivers being punished? Punish that one driver who killed the child, punish his bus owner!”
This year, Blueline buses have killed 64 people with an 11-year-old being the last victim.
So even while Rajendra keeps an eye on the road, his ears can't help hearing the complaints getting louder
The complaints include; “They cause accidents, what do they care? They kill and leave the place,” or “They are rash drivers. They do not control on speed.”
Rajendra however, retorts. “Passengers also make mistakes. They come and stand in front, before the stop. They ask to get down at the red light. I have to do this,” he says.
But these days, explanations don't help. “Why don't the drivers drive properly!” says one passenger.
Rajendra chases a target of at least Rs 4,000 rupees in ticket collection everyday so with that stress, no wonder it's a mad race to get passengers.
More over, one of the biggest accusations against the Blueline buses is a penchant for money. And when profit is the driving force, safety is the first casualty.
And it doesn't help that Delhi has over 47 lakh registered vehicles, which is more than that of Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai put together.
Says Rajendra, “All the autos, rickshaws, cars, two-wheelers are there in the bus lane so where will the bus run?"
Rajendra knows that the best way to steer clear of more blame is to ensure a safer bus journey for his passenger with one bus ride at a time.
